Work overseas this coming summer as an English Camp Tutor (camp counselor). Becoming a Tutor is the perfect job for university students looking for something different to do during the summer holiday.Working overseas with us is not a vacation but in some respects it's better; the tutors live with families and have the opportunity to see Italian and Austrian cultures. Each camp lasts 2 weeks and tutors work at camp from approximately 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday teaching English to Elementary and Middle school students in a fun, summer camp environment. The camps are located in towns throughout Italy and Austria and tutors move to a new camp every 2 weeks. It is an exciting, cultural experience!
The Tutors have to prepare a small lesson plan for their morning English Classes. The lessons should be informative but fun!During the afternoon the tutors work together to organize an afternoon activity for the students. The activities vary from camp to camp and are based on the tutors' likes and dislikes; sports, game shows, and cultural activities from the tutors' home countries are always the most popular.A perfect example of an American cultural activity is the egg or water balloon toss.
We accept applications from anyone that meets the requirements on the Become a Tutor page but our best tutors are generally students in the Education or English fields at university.Often your school will provide University credit for doing an internship with us over the summer. We are very proud to already have a relationship with several universities including Eastern Oregon University.
Orientation
Once you are accepted as a Tutor, you will be required to come to Assisi, Italy in June for a short orientation before the camps commence. During the orientation you will learn examples of games, songs and classroom activities that you can use at camp, and the cultural differences between Austrian and Italian children.
During the orientation week you will also have the opportunity to work with the other tutors at a mini 3/4 day English Camp. Here you can practice the things you have previously learned and become accustomed to how English Camp runs in terms of the daily and weekly Camp Schedule. You will work together with the other tutors to decide the Camp Schedule and you will have the opportunity to plan creative lessons for a small group of children. This mini camp gives you an idea of what a real camp will be like, what ideas, games and songs work and helps you overcome any nerves you may have!
The more creative you can be at camp, the better, and we will be looking forward to seeing all your ideas! Some children have been to English Camp several times and may know certain songs and games; so you must bring new games, songs and ideas to English Camp! The orientation week gives us the opportunity to get to know you, and be able to place you at camps that we think will suit you the best.
The orientation for Summer 2012 will commence on Saturday 9th June in Assisi, Italy. It is compulsory for all accepted tutors to attend the orientation week. Camps will commence Monday 18th June and run through to the end of August or beginning of September.
The Camp Director
During camp there is a Camp Director, who works as a translator and an assistant. The Camp Director is usually a local mother/father or teacher, who speaks the native language and English. They will help you with everything you need for camp, from buying supplies to making snacks and helping with any problems.
Travel
You are required to pay for your trip to Assisi for the orientation and your travel expenses from your final camp of the summer. Your travel expenses during the summer between the camps will be paid by us.
Housing
During the camps you will live with a family that has offered to host a tutor. This experience is a fantastic one, and the families will pamper you with great dinners and include you in their family events. Some towns where our camps are located are not big tourist areas and some families might never have met an American or British person before, and therefore are very excited to have you staying at their house.
You will have your own room and all meals will be provided by the family.
We always ask our tutors to recognise that our hosts come from a different culture and to please respect their different customs; the families will certainly do this.
